CNN Heroes – Warriors on Wheels-bestoftv_2014_05_02_cnnheroes-norton-extra.cnn
Albany, New York (CNN) — Ned Norton was working as a fitness trainer for Olympic athletes and bodybuilders when a young man with a spinal cord injury asked him for help.
“At first, I had no idea what to do with him,” said Norton, who managed a health club in Albany, New York.
Together they developed a workout program, and the young man made great strides.
“Even (his) doctors saw the physical and psychological improvements we were able to make,” Norton said.
It didn’t take long for word to spread. Patients from a rehabilitation center sought out Norton’s help, and he began training them for free. After a newspaper published an article about Norton’s workouts with the disabled, his phone rang off the hook.
“So I opened a gym designed to fit their needs,” he said.
For the past 25 years, Norton has dedicated himself to providing free and low-cost strength and conditioning training for hundreds of people living with a variety of disabilities.
“They can’t move, they can’t be independent. They can’t live their lives,” said Norton, 55. “I’m building them up, building them stronger, so they can go out and live life like they’re supposed to.”
Bodybuilder with a big heart
Norton trains more than 120 people every week through his nonprofit, Warriors on Wheels. His clients’ disabilities include spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome.
“I never worry about what they can’t do,” said Norton. “I worry about what they can do, and make them as independent and capable as possible.”
Participants come to the gym twice a week for one-hour sessions. Norton’s strength-training equipment is specially adapted to fit his clients’ needs. Most of the people he trains are in wheelchairs and rely on their upper body strength to get around.
“The world is more accessible now for people with wheelchairs,” Norton said, “but you’ve got to be strong to be in a wheelchair.”
Tom Clement knows that first-hand. About 40 years ago, he fell off a roof and severed his spinal cord. He has been in a wheelchair ever since.
“When you lose (the use of) your legs, your arms become your legs. So upper body strength is key,” said Clement, 65.
Clement has worked out at Norton’s gym several times a week for the past 15 years. He says it’s helped him live independently.
“My activities in the gym have increased my ability to maintain the stamina of everyday work,” said Clement, who runs a frame shop and art gallery with his brother. “Thanks to Ned, I’ve been able to live a full life.”
For those who can afford to pay it, Norton charges $25 a month. Most of his clients are living on disability income and Social Security, and he says less than half can afford to pay the fee. He never turns away anyone who has a disability.
Strength in numbers
Norton is the only trainer in the facility, which was donated to him by the city. Participants often form friendships and motivate one another. They also become resources for each other, providing advice and references.
“After an accident, people are devastated. Their family and friends have no clue what they are going through. They are out there on their own,” Norton said. “But when they come here, they get a network of people going through the same challenges.”
Kathleen Lane has been coming to the Warriors on Wheels gym for about 15 years to help with her multiple sclerosis. Lane, who is in a wheelchair, also benefits from the social aspect of the program.
“I come out of here feeling better than I do when I first come in,” said Lane, 51. “It changed my life. … Ned’s unbelievable.”
Norton says many of the people he has worked with have gone on to drive again, gain employment and pursue their interests without letting their disabilities get in the way.
“I’m not a genius. I’m not a miracle worker,” Norton said. “But I do know what I’m doing in the gym, because that’s what I love doing and that’s what I have to offer to people.”

A Night Out With Habitat
Friday, May 16th
6:00 – 9:30 pm
The Palace Theatre
Albany, NY
On Friday, May 16 at the Palace Theater, Habitat for Humanity Capital District will celebrate our 25th anniversary at our first benefit event: A Night Out With Habitat.
We are excited to celebrate the accomplishments made possible by our donors, volunteers, partner families and staff. We are in the midst of a transformational time in Habitat’s history— we have more homes under construction than ever before and are engaged in creative and innovative partnerships to better serve our community. 25 years of experience in the community has proven that good housing is the foundation for a better future.
With the splendor of the Palace Theater as our backdrop on May 16, Habitat will premiere a mini-documentary that tells the story of one local family’s struggle to achieve the American Dream. Through the eyes of the Ufomba family, we will witness the challenges that lower-income households face in the Capital District. Every day, Habitat families tell us about the reality of life in our inner cities. Now you will have the chance to hear from one Habitat family directly, in their own voice. We hope you can join us for an evening of truth, celebration and support for our communities and the hardworking families who live and work in them.

“AMERICAN PROMISE” DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AND DISCUSSION
CA$H COALITION AND WMHT TO PRESENT FREE SCREENING AND DISCUSSION OF “AMERICAN PROMISE” DOCUMENTARY
The Madison Theater hosts a special screening of this powerful documentary about education, class, race, and families
What: “American Promise” documentary screening & discussion
Where: Madison Theater
1036 Madison Ave, Albany NY
When: Monday, March 24, 6 – 8 p.m.
ALBANY, N.Y. – Mayor Kathy Sheehan, the Greater Capital Region Creating Assets, Savings and Hope Coalition (CA$H) Coalition and WMHT will present a special free screening and discussion of the documentary film “American Promise” on Monday, March 24 at the Madison Theater.
Winner of a Special Jury Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, “American Promise” is an intimate and provocative account, recorded over 12 years, of the experiences of two middle-class African-American boys who entered a very prestigious – and historically white- private school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. “American Promise”, which traces the boys’ journey from kindergarten through high school graduation, finds the greatest challenge for the boys’ families- and perhaps the country- is to close the black male educational achievement gap, which has been called “the civil rights crusade of the 21st century.”
The free screening and discussion of the film’s themes are presented jointly by the CA$H Coalition and WMHT’s American Graduate Project. CA$H is a coalition of community, social, faith-based, educational, business, financial and government organizations dedicated to promoting financial stability and asset building for individuals and families in New York’s Capital Region. CA$H, which leads the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)/AARP tax aide program, seeks to increase awareness about the availability of tax credits for working individuals, families and seniors. CA$H will also provide information on free tax preparation at the event.
The WMHT American Graduate Project, funded by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, is an initiative to raise awareness about the dropout crisis in our community by engaging a wide range of stakeholders in a dialogue and by mobilizing the community through a multimedia campaign to share resources, best practices and stories of challenge and success. This program is made possible by a grant from American Documentary l POV, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting

Academy Lofts on All Over Albany!
So now that all of the 22 live/work apartments at The Albany Barn are occupied, who lives there? And what does the space look like?
Kristen Holler, The Barn’s executive director, says the mix of artists is just what they hoped for. “We couldn’t have gotten a more diverse group if we planned it that way. The youngest resident is 23 and the oldest is in his 60s. There’s a good mix of men and women and different types of art.”
One of The Barn’s residents is Dana Owens — illustrator, Smallbany creator, and founder of The Machine Artist Co-Op.
Owens gave us a look at his new place recently, and shared some thoughts on what it’s been like for him at the Barn so far.
Owens moved into his apartment in January. Before that he says he was sharing an apartment with two other guys in Albany’s, ahem, education district. “There were a lot of students. There was a lot of yelling.” Owens says it was harder to get things done.
The Barn is the converted St. Joseph’s Academy in Arbor Hill, a handful of blocks northwest of The Palace. The high ceilings and huge windows in all of the apartments give them a very light, airy feel and make them seem much larger than might otherwise appear.
Other residents of The Barn include:
Michael Ortega – filmmaker
Kayla Sacco – filmmaker
Lee-Ann Clarkson – visual Artist
Caitlin McCourt – printmaker/painter
Megan Ruch – painter
Caroline Morgan – painter
B.A. Feldman
Ed O’Connell – sculptor & painter
Emeline Hobbs – collage & photography artist
Jordan Taylor-Hill — a drummer, working on establishing the not-for-profit Niombato Library Project in Senegal
Carey Taylor Noble – writer, creator of FarmFreshtoMarket.com
J.C. Woods – guitarist and illustrator
Emily Dorr – collage installation artist
Charles Sweeney – writer/musician
Nicole Campon – photographer
Dwayne Murphy – comedian
Part of the goal of The Barn is to encourage collaboration between these artists. Owens says that’s already happening. He’s done some screen printing for some of the artists at the Barn, including Jordan Taylor-Hill. In return, Hill has featured Owens and The Machine on a radio program he hosts. Owens has also opened a screen printing shop and studio on Lark Street with some friends and will soon be curating art for Caffé Vero.
Another goal of the project is to get the artists involved in the surrounding neighborhood. Owens is thinking about working on a mural project. “Something like Living Walls, but with much more of a community feel.”
Eventually The Barn will hold open house events, in which artists will open their apartments and studios to the public.
The other half of The Barn will soon house performance, office, studio and rehearsal space. It’s expected to be finished in the next moth or so, and tenants have already begun reserving spaces.
As mentioned, the 22 residential units in The Barn are occupied. But the org is currently accepting applications from artists interested for when units open up. That link includes information about the process, including the household income limits for applicants.
The Barn is holding a fundraiser March 27 at The Comedy Works featuring resident and comedian Dwayne Murphy. The headliner is Tom Briscoe.

Capital South Laundry Opens!
Capital South Laundry Opens to Praise and Customers
News Release
The grand opening of the South End’s brand new Capital South Laundry establishes an important amenity in the revitalization of the area as a community of positive choices. The sparkling clean, new facility at 344 South Pearl Street is open to everyone and will feature a community bulletin board. Water for washers is heated by a solar system, with roof-mounted collectors, and will be demonstrated at the event. A grant from the New York State Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) made acquisition of the solar system possible, and will reduce operational costs for years to come while helping to protect the environment.
Solar system’s power production and environmental benefits:
- This solar thermal system will offset 14,689 kilowatt hours of electricity, which is equivalent to 46.3 million BTUs or approximately 562 therms per year according to the Solar Pathfinder Report.
- Assuming the New York state historical increases in utilities at approximately 5% per year, with the cost at $1.10/therm this solar system will produce a savings of about $618 in the first year and $41,072 over the course of its 30 year life span.
- This system will prevent 212,317 lbs. of CO2 from entering the Earth’s atmosphere, or is the equivalent of planting 38,603 trees.
- The estimated return on investment of this system before inflation is about three to four years.
Omni Housing Development LLC and the Albany Housing Authority, acting as co-developers — with extensive experience in energy efficient, affordable housing — are leading the Phase 3 project team for revitalization of the South End Albany neighborhood, plus meeting all guidelines of the City of Albany Historic Resource Commission, and NYS Homes and Community Renewal Green Building Initiative. The Construction Manager is AOW Associates, Inc. Phase 3 of the South End Revitalization initiative consists 56 residential units in eight new and rehabilitated buildings scattered throughout the historic South End neighborhood. Cumulatively, the initiative has resulted in a $36 million investment in the community and 151 units of modern affordable housing.
Solar collectors mounted on the roof of the Capital South Laundry.
New Capital South Laundry at 344 South Pearl Street.
Quote from Mayor Sheehan: “I commend the vision of the Albany Housing Authority and Omni Development in turning this project into a reality. This facility is a great example of public and private organizations working together to better the lives of our city’s residents. Capital South Laundry will enhance the livability and sustainability of Albany while encouraging further business investment in the South End.”
Quote from Assembly member McDonald: “I am excited to see the continuation of the revitalization in the South End of Albany with this additional investment. In my short time in the NYS assembly representing this area the level of investment in this neighborhood is impressive and signals a continued renewal that bodes well I. The Capital city of Albany.”
NYSERDA’s Solar Thermal Program is funded by New York State’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) to displace electric hot water with solar. Incentives are granted first-come, first served, and applications will be accepted until Dec. 31, 2015 or until the funds are fully committed. The program provides incentives of up to $4,000 per site for eligible residential customers and up to $25,000 per site for non-residential customers. “As the South End revitalization continues, I commend the developers for incorporating clean, renewable energy into their planning of Capital South Laundry,” said John B. Rhodes, president and CEO, NYSERDA. “Solar hot water technology, which supports Governor Cuomo’s clean-energy agenda, allows businesses and homeowners to reduce their carbon footprint and decrease their energy costs. This project is a good example of how a community at large can benefit from this technology.”
MAC-GRAY The Laundry Room Experts sees this as new and exciting venture to be partnering with AHA on a public laundry facility, and they see a lot of potential in Albany’s South End. They would encourage other businesses to take a look at the South End, and they praise AHA, The City of Albany and NYS Home and Community Renewal for supporting the initiative. Matthew Gilbert, District Sales Manager said, “Mac-Gray is extremely excited to enter into this new partnership with Albany Housing Authority and the revitalization of the South End. Not only is this a new venture for AHA but Mac-Gray as well. Our core partnership with AHA is to provide laundry solutions for residents of AHA. AHA and Mac-Gray are now branching off to service the local community in the South End of Albany.”
