South End Food Distribution – URGENT REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS

A message from the South End Community Collaborative:

My Dear Friends,

I am writing all of you today to ask for your help.

We are having a mass food distribution on Friday, August 21st. It will be held at 230 Green Street, Albany, in the Centro Civico parking lot starting at
9:30am. We will be distributing 24 tons of food that day and need as many volunteers as we can get. I have attached both the flyer for the distribution and the flyer requesting volunteers.

This is a crucial time and the success of the day depends on volunteers to assist us in providing this much needed resource during this pandemic. I am aware that many of you have gone back to work, so if you cannot attend, please forward to your friends who may still be working from home and can contribute some time to this worthy cause.

I thank you in advance and in prayer. My mobile number is listed below, please feel free to call or text.

Story Walk presented by the Albany Public Library

APL (Albany Public Library) has partnered with several community and city organizations, and the Upper Hudson Library System, to bring StoryWalks® to Albany neighborhoods!

A StoryWalk® is a way for families with young children to enjoy reading stories while outdoors.

Pages from picture books are laminated and attached to wooden stakes that are posted at regular intervals along an outdoor walking path or sidewalk. As families stroll, they stop and read pages of the story.

Albany Public Library’s StoryWalks® will be up through September 2020.

Albany Honors George Marbley

City of Albany Honors George Marbley’s Dedication to the Community
By Spectrum News Staff

A piece of Albany’s skyline has been renamed in honor of a man who dedicated much of his life to the community.

The apartment building at 230 Green Street was dubbed the George Marbley Tower in a ceremony on Friday.

Marbley was as a long time Housing Authority resident and activist. He served on the City Wide Tenant Council for almost 40 years and helped to bring about more fairness in city housing.

April 12 would have been his 100th birthday.

“We have a lot of people that have done tremendous things in this city, for this city, and Mr. Marbley is probably at the top of it, because a lot of things that he did he didn’t benefit from,” said Derek Johnson of the Albany Common Council. “A lot of kids in summer had the chance to go experience things that they wouldn’t have had the chances to experience, had it not been for Mr. Marbley.”

A new street sign that reads “George Marbley Way” is also up. It sits alongside the current sign for Green Street.

Marbley passed away in 2016.

Albany Public Library Partners with City of Albany to Provide Free WiFi in Three Albany Parks

Albany Public Library Partners with City of Albany to Provide Free WiFi in Three Albany Parks

Internet Service at Washington, Lincoln, and Bleecker-Swinburne Parks to Begin in Spring 2019

ALBANY, NY – The Albany Public Library is partnering with the City of Albany to bring free wireless internet to three municipal parks—Washington, Lincoln, and Bleecker-Swinburne—in spring 2019.

The project, which will be funded by the Library and maintained by the City, will provide parkgoers with free WiFi in several neighborhoods where many residents lack internet service in their own homes.

“Libraries have always been the primary bridge over the digital divide, and for many people we are their only source for internet service. This project allows us to reach more people in the community,” said Scott C. Jarzombek, APL executive director. “Libraries cannot just be inside the four walls of their buildings. We need to be embedded in the community we serve. By providing WiFi services in several city parks, Albany Public Library is reaching further into the community and expanding our services to meet its needs.”

“Every day we see how vital Internet access is to connecting our residents with job opportunities, educational resources, and local services,” said Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan.  “Bringing WiFi to Washington, Lincoln, and Bleecker-Swinburne parks will help us as we continue to work toward closing the digital divide, especially in some of our most historically underserved communities.  I am excited to expand the City’s relationship with the Albany Public Library and thank Executive Director Scott Jarzombek, as well as our Commissioner of Recreation Jonathan Jones and Chief Information Officer Mark Dorry, for their commitment to Albany’s neighborhoods.”

“I am excited that three of our City parks will have free WiFi beginning in Spring 2019 through a partnership with the Albany Public Library,” said Department of Recreation Commissioner Jonathan Jones.  “The ability to connect to the Internet for free will provide a 21st-century amenity in our parks and adjoining neighborhoods where many simply cannot afford it. This effort is yet another example of all we can accomplish for our residents by working together.”

People already rely on the library to provide internet access. Each month at APL’s seven branches, more than 12,000 patrons use the library’s public computers and more than 7,000 people access WiFi on their own devices. Access to the internet from those sources enables people to apply for jobs online, stay connected to family through email and social media, and continue to be engaged members of the community. Jarzombek said the library was part of the city’s broadband study, and he recognized that APL needed to be a key partner in providing free WiFi to Albany residents.

“Our strategic plan calls for an expansion of wireless internet as a way to enhance the library’s space, tools, and resources as a platform for community learning, creativity, and engagement. We’re thrilled to be able to do that in the city’s parks, where people from different neighborhoods gather for recreation and fellowship,” Jarzombek said.

Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) Information

The Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) is a voluntary program of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). RAD seeks to preserve public housing by providing Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) with access to more stable funding to make needed improvements to properties. Public housing units across the country need more than $26 billion in repairs. HUD refers to these repair costs as capital needs. Congress has not provided enough funding for PHAs to keep up with capital needs. As a result, PHAs have had to make tough choices between things like repairing roofs and replacing plumbing—or worse, demolishing public housing. RAD provides PHAs a way to rehabilitate, or repair, units without depending on additional money from Congress.
