Sonic hiring staff, including store and district managers, were on site for three days of hiring at The WAGE Center in July. After 175 interviews, 49 people were hired on site at The WAGE Center. This included Housing Authority Resi-dents and Housing Choice Voucher recipi-ents who now have new jobs to look for-ward to when the brand new Albany Sonic opens later this summer.
Community partners referred can-didates to the hiring sessions at the WAGE Center where they were interviewed at up to three times in one day, some resulting in an offer being made on the spot.
The Southend of Albany and the Mt. Hope neighborhood are in close prox-imity to the new the new restaurant and plaza being constructed on Southern Boulevard. Sonic offers accessible job opportunities to residents with the Route 7 CDTA bus planning stops at the Mt. Hope Commons and the easy walking distance from the Mt. Hope neighborhood.
Very positive responses to the three day hiring event at The WAGE Center were expressed by employment candidates and hiring staff from Sonic. As the new restaurant continues construction, more candidates will be hired. Orientation will oc-cur in August prior to the store opening.
According to one long-time homeowner in the Mt. Hope neighborhood (and new Sonic employee), the addition of Sonic and the Mt. Hope Commons project is welcome not only for jobs, but also in terms of offering dining and other services to residents.
Hiring will be ongoing until the restaurant is fully staffed. For assistance with accessing online applications, job seekers are encouraged to visit The WAGE Center at 200 Green Street. Or, applicants can also apply directly on the Sonic website at: sonicdrivein.com
The WAGE Center looks forward to maintaining a positive working relation-ship with Sonic in order to maximize the opportunity for local residents to gain em-ployment. For more information please call The WAGE Center at: 518-380-5600.
Falonda lived on Green Street as an Albany Housing Authority resident until last month, when she bought a home for her family. It was through Affordable Housing Partnership (AHP), that she learned about the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) Program at the WAGE Center.
When she first started home buyer programs, two and a half years ago, Falonda realized that she needed to establish credit. So, she started “getting credit cards and making on-time payments.” During that process she says, “I built my credit score up and [started thinking about] meeting the criteria needed to take the next steps.”
Through AHP, she learned about a matched savings program. She says, “It disciplined me to save.” In addition, she enrolled in FSS, which allowed her to save more money toward owning and furnishing a home. Of the FSS program she says, “I like goals. I like challenges. Pay your rent on time…I took that and ran with it.” Paying rent on time, and earning more money, she accumulated escrow savings with FSS.
Becoming a homeowner has made Falonda feel “peacefulness.” She says, that through the process of saving and working toward owning a home, she has gained, “peace of mind and [is feeling] accomplished.” She says, “My goal was to own a home. I achieved that. Now, I can achieve anything I put my mind to.”
Falonda learned about AHP in a conversation with her sister’s friend and FSS through her Housing Advisor. She says she had some “disbelief” that earning money for savings through increased earned income wasn’t a “gimmick,” because, who would give you free money? But, she encourages Albany Housing Authority residents and Housing Choice Voucher recipients to check out FSS and, “Set a goal. Write it down.” Then, “take the steps to achieving.”
In the fist month of owning a home, Falonda has already contacted a contractor to look at her fist renovation project, bought new furniture and is considering new windows. During the next five years she talks about, “looking at buying property and becoming a future landlord.”
Joining FSS and working through AHP’s program has allowed for “growth and expanding my horizons,” according to Falonda. She says, with a smile, that she is now thinking about new things like buying a lawnmower and a rake and other “homeowner issues.” Falonda is the perfect example of how FSS and partner programs can help participants achieve their goals and dreams.

A letter from the W.A.G.E. Center:
September 19, 2016
Hello,
I am delighted to announce that the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) is launching the Juvenile Reentry Assistance Program (JRAP) this fall. JRAP is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) Second Chance Act funds. The goal of JRAP is to assist young people with reintegrating back into their communities. LASNNY is partnering with the Albany Housing Authority (AHA) and the “Working to Achieve Gainful Employment” (W.A.G.E.) Center to implement this program.
The program will assist young people up to age 24 who have juvenile or criminal records residing in public housing, or who would be able to reside in public housing if they did not have a record. The services provided will assist individuals with: sealing and/or correcting juvenile or adult records as permitted by New York State law, counseling regarding legal rights and obligations in relation to searching for employment, and alleviating collateral consequences associated with reentering the community. LASNNY is eager to begin assisting our community with overcoming obstacles in accessing public housing, gaining employment, and pursuing educational opportunities, obstacles which are often brought on by criminal justice involvement and rap sheets.
As a valued community organization and ally in social justice, I would encourage you to contact me at (518) 533-5935, or via e-mail at cshukla@lasnny.org for more information and to discuss establishing a simple referral relationship. I am happy to meet with you and your organization to discuss this program in depth and answer any questions. Please note: I will be holding office hours at the W.A.G.E. Center on 200 Green Street in Albany on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 p.m. In addition, on Wednesday, September 21st, the W.A.G.E. Center and Legal Aid will be holding a Legal Information Workshop from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at AHA’s 200 South Pearl Street, First Floor conference room. Clients can feel free to drop in during office hours and/or attend the workshop for more information. Clients can request assistance by calling me directly at (518) 533-5935 during business hours, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Thank you for your attention and I look forward to working together on this new initiative.
Sincerely,
Chaula Shukla

The Capital Region Impact Awards are presented by The Stakeholder, Inc. This award honors businesses and community partners who come together to make the Capital District a better place. A partnership between Albany Housing Authority, Community Technology Initiative and Hampton Inn was honored for its Work Experience Program. The award is presented to a partnership that collaborates to achieve significant, measurable results impacting the community.
CTI, in partnership with AHA, created a work experience program that takes residents and works with them to create a work history and skills that are marketable. When a resident enters the program they spend time learning soft skills and creating a resume. They then move into the Hampton where they are interns and rotate through each department in the hotel for four weeks. During this time they get to experience what it is like to actually work in the hospitality industry as well as the basic skills involved in gaining and maintaining employment. Over the past seven years the Hampton has hired almost exclusively from the work experience program. The job coach that accompanies the residents onsite helps with the transition to the world of work. During the past seven years, over 50 people have been hired at the Hampton. Often it is a jumping off point to other careers and opportunities. It has served as a door to a more successful future. A partnership such as this has benefitted both the Hampton and the residents who have been part of the program.
The staff at THE Center (formerly the WAGE Center) partnered with SEFCU to provide a financial literacy workshop for Family Self Sufficiency program members. The workshop looked at topics such as how to improve your credit, how credit scores are determined and how to use credit wisely. This workshop was the first in a series of workshops to be provided. If you would like more information on how to participate in the Family Self Sufficiency program and have access to various services to support your goals contact THE Center at 380-5600.
In 2007, the year the Hampton Inn and Suites opened its doors in downtown Albany, a collaboration to create and manage a Work Experience Program was born between the hotel, The Albany Housing Authority (AHA) and the Community Technology Initiative (CTI). The idea was simple. Create a train-to-work program giving participants an opportunity to learn necessary skills to build careers, develop confidence and grow as individuals. At the same time, The Hampton Inn and Suites gains a pool of valuable employees, builds a strong community, improves the hospitality workforce and capitalizes on benefits for the company.
Over the past six years, the work experience program has averaged 28 individuals annually. Participants who enter the two to four week intensive work training experience at the hotel, are given a uniform, and put to work shadowing and assisting employees in hotel departments such as housekeeping, breakfast bar, laundry and hotel public areas. The hands-on experience allows participants to gain quick skill sets that can be put into immediate use and presents opportunities to impress the host organization for possible future employment.
The program benefits for the Hampton Inn and Suites are three-fold. First, the partnership supports the local community by offering much needed job training opportunities. Additionally, fresh and eager individuals are introduced to the hotel as a way to replenish the workforce and keep It stable. Lastly, the corporate entity of the Hampton Inn receives tax incentives as a program participant.
According to Todd Reichelt, General Manager, Hampton Inn and Suites, Albany-Downtown, The hospitality industry has a history of being a good corporate citizen and giving back to our local communities. The work experience program with AHA and CTI allows us to continue that tradition while enhancing our workforce.” Training new people costs time and money for any business. Hotel management embraces this fact and trains program participants to be successful.
For most, the job is a tremendous stepping stone,” explains Reichelt, We have a core of housekeeping and front office associates that have been here for a number of years. So they rub shoulders with these people and make friends and sometimes, that’s what they need more than anything. Other people they can relate to that have been somewhat successful at what they do so they can be a role model for them.” A position at the Hampton Inn is not guaranteed, but many successful participants in the training program are considered for serious employment. Some even go on to train others.

T.H.E. Center Welcomes Stephanie Troiano!
I am currently the G.E.D. Teacher for T.H.E. Center. I hold a New York State Teaching license in both Early Childhood (birth-grade 2) and Childhood Education (grades 1-6). I have my B.A. in Education from Alfred University and will be graduating with my M.S. in Reading and Literacy, through Capella University, in 2013. With my M.S. degree, I will be certified to teach reading and literacy at any age level.
Before joining T.H.E. Center, I was a substitute teacher for grades K-12, and a Pre-K teacher at a Head Start program. During this time, I was also able to coach girls’ volleyball and work on my music. These are both very strong aspects of my life.
After working in the insurance field for a short while, I am glad to be back in an educational setting where I can help those who are striving to become more successful in life. Hopefully, I will be able to inspire my students inside, as well as, outside my classroom.
Work Experience Program
Marriott Hotel
In June of 2012, jumping off the success of Work Experience Program at the Hampton Inn, the WAGE Center began a new partnership with the Marriott Hotel of Colonie, N.Y. This partnership was initiated by the Marriott to help fill a void in qualified employees. We are looking forward to building a relationship with another well-established company that is able to provide our clients with the opportunity to build careers in the field of hospitality.
Our first program at the Marriott was a huge success. We enrolled four clients into the program at the Marriott, all of whom were hired at the end of the internship. Looking forward, we feel that securing this new location for the Work Experience Program has greatly contributed to our client’s success in obtaining gainful employment as well as the demand for qualified employees at the Marriott.
AHA would like to announce that we have applied for the following technology and employment related grants for the continued operation of T.H.E Center:
