“AMERICAN PROMISE” DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AND DISCUSSION

CA$H COALITION AND WMHT TO PRESENT FREE SCREENING AND DISCUSSION OF “AMERICAN PROMISE” DOCUMENTARY
The Madison Theater hosts a special screening of this powerful documentary about education, class, race, and families

What: “American Promise” documentary screening & discussion
Where:
Madison Theater
1036 Madison Ave, Albany NY
When: Monday, March 24, 6 – 8 p.m.

ALBANY, N.Y. – Mayor Kathy Sheehan, the Greater Capital Region Creating Assets, Savings and Hope Coalition (CA$H) Coalition and WMHT will present a special free screening and discussion of the documentary film “American Promise” on Monday, March 24 at the Madison Theater.

Winner of a Special Jury Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, “American Promise” is an intimate and provocative account, recorded over 12 years, of the experiences of two middle-class African-American boys who entered a very prestigious – and historically white- private school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. “American Promise”, which traces the boys’ journey from kindergarten through high school graduation, finds the greatest challenge for the boys’ families- and perhaps the country- is to close the black male educational achievement gap, which has been called “the civil rights crusade of the 21st century.”

The free screening and discussion of the film’s themes are presented jointly by the CA$H Coalition and WMHT’s American Graduate Project. CA$H is a coalition of community, social, faith-based, educational, business, financial and government organizations dedicated to promoting financial stability and asset building for individuals and families in New York’s Capital Region. CA$H, which leads the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)/AARP tax aide program, seeks to increase awareness about the availability of tax credits for working individuals, families and seniors. CA$H will also provide information on free tax preparation at the event.

The WMHT American Graduate Project, funded by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, is an initiative to raise awareness about the dropout crisis in our community by engaging a wide range of stakeholders in a dialogue and by mobilizing the community through a multimedia campaign to share resources, best practices and stories of challenge and success. This program is made possible by a grant from American Documentary l POV, with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting
